Richard Blickman, founder and CEO of BE Semiconductor Industries (Besi), studied theoretical mechanics at Delft University of Technology. A native of Amsterdam, he developed an interest in semiconductors during his studies.

Career Beginnings and ASM International

After working briefly at SHV Holdings (1981-1984), Blickman joined ASM International in 1984. ASM is known as a pioneer in the European chip machinery industry, spawning companies like ASML and Besi.

Formation of Besi

In the 1980s, ASM faced financial troubles, and Blickman was assigned to prepare a subsidiary for sale. In 1993, ASM Fico was sold to Berliner Elektro Holding and renamed BE Semiconductor (Besi). Blickman positioned the company through innovation in the Netherlands, cost-effective production in Asia, and securing major clients like Intel and Motorola.

Growth and Public Offering

Besi went public in 1995, valued at $331 million. Blickman became director and used the capital raised to expand, including acquiring Austrian firm Datacon for €73 million.

Current Status of Besi

Today, Besi is a Dutch chip packaging machine manufacturer headquartered in Duiven. Most production and employment are based in Asia, especially China and Malaysia. The company supplies major semiconductor manufacturers and earns three-quarters of its revenue from the Asian market.
